Hidden in Plain Sight: Millwork That “Disappears” on Longboat Key

Another repeat client, another great room transformed.

When repeat clients called us back to help create their new build Longboat Key residence, we knew exactly what tool to reach for: custom millwork. This time, the challenge was a great room with a soaring 20-foot vaulted ceiling, where the kitchen, dining, and living areas all come together in one dramatic space.

Getting there took some fun work! Starting with the architect’s original elevation, we sketched several millwork concepts directly onto the plans, testing different proportions and placements and ultimately landed on the best design for the final build and ultimately this blog.

Millwork did double duty here: On the vaulted side wall of the greatroom, the kitchen area, it elevated the whole room with architectural presence. Yet it also solved a real design problem: two doorways interrupting an otherwise stunning wall. One door led to the pantry, laundry room, and second kitchen.  The other opened to the primary suite. Left as plain doors, they would have broken the wall’s impact and also stripped away privacy leading to those areas.

With doors closed, you’d never guess rooms exist behind them. Open, they function exactly as needed. That’s the beauty of custom millwork: camouflaging doorways: privacy and design working together.

We carried the cohesion further, aligning pendant lighting in the beamed millwork ceiling over the kitchen island and contrasting chandeliers over the a 12-foot dining table, curating every finish and furniture piece in the room.

Millwork isn’t one-size-fits-all. We customize pattern, scale, and shape to fit your walls and your privacy needs.
