Imagine walking into a completely white empty greatroom: white shiny floor tile, white walls, white ceiling, white baseboards and white kitchen countertops. Where and how do you start designing? (Have you been challenged with inheriting a bland dining area in a great-room?)
Here’s the big hint: The large wall (that’s naturally for the dining area) is a great spot for contrast color wallpaper. The sexy slate blue real grasscloth wallpaper became the backdrop for an oversize credenza, wall art and glass trimmed floor-lamps. Not only did the contrast color wallpaper define the dining area, but it added well needed contrast to all the surrounding white color.
What to do next? The dining table size is defined by the size of the room, (the length of the wall, in this case) and the length of a new chandelier should fall between half and 3/4 of the length of the table. Generally speaking, the bottom of the chandelier should be spaced between 29”-32” above the table surface.

If your flooring is overwhelming, (this white floor was just too vast), consider an area rug that spans at least 3’ wider all around the dining table. This allows for all the chairs to stay on it even when pulled out. Don’t be afraid to use the same style rug in the dining area as in the conversation area. Often it makes complete sense because so much of the convo area rug is covered AND it eliminates the challenge of finding a complementary rug when the greatroom is such an open space.
Lastly, remember human height lighting: Lamps! The drama of the overhead lighting can be softened and rooms balanced by surrounding the area with lamps, whether floorlamps or table lamps.
