Creating balanced, beautiful displays with a curated color palette
- Living in Florida means embracing both the relaxed coastal lifestyle and the vibrant natural beauty that surrounds us. When it comes to styling shelves in your home, you can capture this essence through thoughtful arrangement and a carefully chosen color scheme.
Today, we’re exploring how to create stunning shelf displays, in this case, using white and black, blue and green accents, and warm neutral tones– a palette that perfectly reflects Florida’s beaches, waters, and natural landscapes. We chose this color palette for our elegant Sarasota client’s new home, after selecting two open etageres, a desk and artwork for their new home office. This color grouping can work in many Florida homes.
HERE’S HOW TO THINK OF EACH COLOR
White: Acts as a primary neutral, creating breathing room and reflecting Florida’s abundant natural light
Black: Provides grounding and contrast, preventing the collection from feeling washed out
Blue: Echoes our coastal waters and skies, bringing calm energy to the arrangements
Green: Represents our lush tropical foliage and adds life to the displays
Neutral Brown: Adds warmth and natural texture, reminiscent of driftwood and sandy shores
CREATING VISUAL BALANCE
Before placing a single item, understand that successful shelf styling starts by creating a focal point. This prevents the common mistake of lining items up in a row, which looks static and uninteresting.
Building Your Shelf Story: Layer by Layer
Layer 1: THE STAR OF THE SHOW:
Start with your largest items – these anchor your display.
- A large ceramic vase or grouping of 3 sculptural pieces
- Black or neutral picture frames with family photos (vary the sizes)
- Neutral brown wooden bowls or trays as base elements
- Stacked boxes
- Dramatic floral arrangement or long window box
- A collection of books within balanced bookends
Layer 2: THE SUPPORTING CAST
Add medium-sized items that complement your anchors:
- Blue white and green ceramic bowls or vases in varying heights
- Green potted plants or vase arrangements, green leaf orbs, clusters of blooms, or dripping faux succulents bring Florida Indoors. Plants are essential in Florida shelf styling – they connect your interior to our exterior. Keep arrangements proportional to your shelves- a massive bouquet will look overwhelming.
- Frame selection: stay within your chosen color palette: white, black or neutral accented frames
- Keep in mind to balance all accessories in a grouping : high, medium and low coordinated heights. This creates harmony rather than a jumble that is hard to digest.
- Keep some areas of your shelves empty of items. A rest for the eyes allows appreciation for your each item in your collection.
