At SRQ Interior Design, we believe great design isn’t about following rules—it’s about knowing when to break them. This dining area transformation is a perfect example of how challenging conventional thinking can completely redefine a space.
The original room featured a dated round table and four chairs, and white curtain panels surrounding all three windows. The space felt crowded, colorless, and underutilized, especially considering the impressive ceiling height and architectural character of the room.
One of the biggest design myths is that in this type of room, each window needs curtain panels. In spaces with multiple windows, less can often be more. By installing custom drapery panels only where they would have the greatest visual impact and hanging them as high as possible, we emphasized the room’s soaring ceiling height and created a more dramatic, elegant backdrop. The eye is naturally drawn upward, making the room feel larger and more sophisticated.
Another rule we happily broke? The assumption that a curved space requires a round table. Replacing the small round table with a larger rectangular glass-top dining table completely transformed the functionality of the room. What was once a crowded four-seat arrangement became an elegant six-seat gathering space. The glass surface allows light to pass through, maintaining an airy, open feeling despite the table’s larger footprint.
We also introduced a modern chandelier, hung lower for better scale and intimacy. The visual void behind it was intentionally filled with a striking contemporary clock, adding personality, balance, and architectural interest.
Finally, a rectangular and colorful area rug softened the hard tile flooring, anchored the furnishings, and tied every element together with texture and warmth.
This project proves that breaking design “rules” often leads to the most beautiful results. At SRQ Interior Design, we specialize in seeing possibilities where others see limitations. Reach out to us today and let us redefine your space—we’ll make it work, make it functional, and most importantly, make it beautifully yours.
